The Phantom of the Opera made its debut in London’s West End. Top Gun was the biggest film of the year, and the 80s pop group Wham! had broken up. Can you guess the year?
Yes, it was 1986. The heyday of beach package holidays with families crowded into high-rise hotels.
Nick, our founder, was beside the pool of a private villa in the Algarve sunshine at the time. He wondered if quality holidays were as important to others as they were to his family. He quickly discovered four things, two great, two a bit challenging:
- Yes, it was important to others. That villa became our first, and it was always booked.
- People loved it because he insisted on making everything perfect, himself.
- Point 2 meant that he couldn’t recommend a villa that he’d never experienced himself.
- To provide the facilities for a great holiday, Nick had to fund villa owners himself.
Amo Hotels was born. Later joined by our current Chief Joy Maker, Raj, they expanded the availability of villas with private pools, installing other features too that put even higher standards in place across all villas.
Today, we have over 1,200 villas in 22 destinations. We still hand-pick everything, never taking on a villa we have not personally visited.
Together with our customers and owners, a community has arisen around a love of making the best holidays we can. It’s how Amo Hotels is now the home of uncommonly amazing holidays.

In all our destinations, we have friendly, bi-lingual Villa Co-Ordinators who are available 7 days a week during office hours via phone, text, email or WhatsApp.
They have excellent local knowledge and personally check our villas on a regular basis ensuring your villa is maintained to our high standards.
